6 Summertime Cleaning Tips

You may be consumed with camps, vacations, and summertime fun, but before you know it, there’ll be a nip of fall in the air and the kids will be heading back to school. Instead of letting those long summer days go to waste, use them to tackle some of the tasks you’ve been putting off and get ahead of the autumn rush. These summertime cleaning tips will help you get ahead of your to-do list and freshen up your space.

Summertime Cleaning Tips

 1. Lighten Up

 2. Organize

 3. Clean Soft Surfaces

 4. Work Top to Bottom

 5. Enlist Help

 6. Make it Fun!

Lighten Up

Summertime is a great time to take a look at your closets, bookshelves, garage, and other storage areas and consider culling those things you don’t use. A good rule of thumb? According to lifestyle guru Marie Kondo’s popular book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, ask yourself whether that book, tchotchke, or piece of clothing “sparks joy.” If not, it might be time to give it up.

Not sure what to do with the items you’ve decided to discard? Don’t just throw them out. There are many shelters, children’s homes, and charitable organizations that are eager to take in your children’s outgrown clothing or that furniture you no longer use. Be sure and ask for a receipt so that you can deduct your donation at tax time.

While you’re cleaning, you’ll want to get ahead of your next mess by better organizing your space. Clean out your pantry and discard half-used items. Create clearly labeled containers to store staples so that you always know when it’s time to replenish. Have out-of-season items like coats and bedding cleaned, then store in plastic bins so they’ll be ready for the first cold snap.

Help the kids organize their rooms so there’s a place for everything, making cleanup easier. Check out your own space and see how you can add a little user-friendly organization to your clothes closets, linen closet, or bathroom cabinet.

And, don’t forget, even the garage can use a little TLC. Getting your garage organized means you have more space to store all of your favorite summer toys like slip-and-slides and bikes.

Clean Soft Surfaces

Get carpets, upholstery, and curtains or draperies professionally cleaned, or look for DIY options. Rent a steam cleaner or invest in your own -- there are a variety of affordable steamer/vacuum combos that you can use again and again. If you have pets, choose a steamer with a special setting for pet hair and stains.

Don’t forget your bed – mattresses, pillows, and comforters could also use a good refresh. Have pets? Invest in new pet beds or wash removable covers then put them outside in the sun to freshen up. This is also a good time to go through your linen closet and replace worn out towels and bedding. Finally, if your throw pillows are a little stale, put them in the dryer with some tennis balls and tumble to get rid of dust, then put them outside to air out.

Work Top to Bottom

Start by cleaning ceiling fans, dusting crown molding, and move your way down to the tops of furniture and appliances. Finally, clean baseboards, floors, and carpeting last so that you can capture any remaining dust. Take care to choose the right cleaners for your flooring surfaces – different flooring types require different products and techniques. Don’t forget to pay attention to corners and hidden spots behind and underneath furniture.

Enlist Help

This is the perfect time to bring on the whole family to help with your clean-up project. With the kids home from school and summer vacations in full swing, this is a great time to set aside a day or a weekend to tackle all of those things you never seem to have time for. Work together or put each person in charge of a different room or chore. Create a checklist and have each one check off their task as it’s completed.

Make It Fun!

Don’t forget to create opportunities for fun while you’re working your way down that to-do list. Create challenges and games, play music, and keep things light. Set aside plenty of time so no one feels rushed and you can take frequent breaks. Stream a favorite movie on screens throughout the house so everyone can “watch” while they work.

When your clean-up is complete, it’s time to celebrate! Plan a special night out, a visit to a theme park, or a relaxing pool day to reward the family for a job well-done. Tackling this on your own? You deserve a spa day – don’t forget the massage and manicure.

When you love your home, it’s a pleasure to take care of it. Regular deep cleaning and refreshing will ensure that your home stays beautiful year after year, retaining value and enjoyment.
