History of Golf in Palm Springs

Once upon a time, in the enchanted desert of Coachella Valley, oil tycoon Thomas O'Donnell created a golfer's paradise. In 1926, he transformed a humble campground near his beloved Desert Inn into the O'Donnell Golf Club, crafting the perfect personal playground. But fate had other plans, casting a shadow of health setbacks that threatened to end his golfing story.

Yet, O'Donnell's heart swelled with joy as he watched others revel in the magic of the fairway. Determined to keep his legacy alive, he ensured the club would flourish even after his death. To this day, the O'Donnell Golf Club stands as a testament to one man's love for the game and a gift to those who share his passion.

Palm Springs is a golfer's paradise that emerged from the golden age of greens. What started as a humble beginning in the 1940s rapidly expanded through the swinging '60s, bringing 14 new courses. The 1970s witnessed a golf boom with over 40 additions, and by the dawn of the 21st century, this oasis boasted nearly 100 incredible courses to challenge and delight players of all levels.

In the enchanting era of Hollywood's golden age, Palm Springs flourished as a dazzling escape for the glitterati seeking refuge from the prying eyes of gossipmongers. However, it was the birth of the Thunderbird Country Club in 1951 and its prestigious rendezvous with the Ryder Cup in 1955 that set the stage for pro golfing in Palm Springs. With time, the renowned Thunderbird invitational transformed into the Desert Classic, thriving as an unmissable West Coast PGA tour stop that has carved its own legacy.
