Choosing the Perfect Lighting for Your New Home

Lighting plays an important role in your home—from choosing the right types of light bulbs to figuring out which home lighting fixtures to match. The right lighting can add a welcoming warmth, make it easier to read, or increase the feel of depth in your space. But determining lighting can also be a daunting task, especially if you’re starting from scratch. Use these tips to help make the ultimate home lighting plan.

Tip 1: Consider Your Home's Natural Lighting First

Your lighting plan should enhance the natural light that’s already in your space. You can use that natural light to help layer your lighting by mixing it in with other sources of light like pendants, lamps and more. This layered approach can add ambience to your space and create points of interest.

Tip 2: Take a Room-By-Room Approach

Let’s go over the different types of home lighting fixtures to focus on in each space. Taking a room-by-room approach can help you craft a plan that doesn’t feel too overwhelming.

Kitchen Lighting

There are a few areas in the kitchen to focus on. Start with your dining table and kitchen island. Position lighting over these areas around 28 to 34 inches above the top of the surface, keeping in mind that it’s best to position smaller lights slightly lower and larger lights slightly higher. A spotlight over the center of the table will help to draw people in.

Next, move into the other areas of your kitchen. Consider whether you’ll want top lighting either above or inside of your cabinets. Another option is strip lighting placed below the cabinet bases, which could help late-night snackers navigate the space in the dark while also adding a flair of style. There are plenty more kitchen lighting ideas to consider, but this is a great place to start.

Pulte Kitchenology

If you’re working with home builders, like the ones at Pulte Homes, you can make lighting an even greater focus for your kitchen with home designs specifically focused on improving natural light. The Illuminator™ – one of Pulte’s most sought after kitchen design styles focuses on a spacious kitchen with loads of natural light.

Living Room Lighting

In an open-concept layout, your living room often feels like a natural extension from your kitchen. You can help enhance this by choosing some of the same home lighting fixtures in both areas. That doesn’t mean that you’re limited to just those fixtures, they’re merely a layer of light that you might consider adding. Wall lighting, like scones, might be a good option in this case.

Other areas of your living room to consider are spots where light might be necessary. If there’s a chair you plan on reading at every night, make sure you have a light available for this exact purpose. Of course, your living room might serve many different purposes depending on the time of day. Consider having some dimming light options for when it’s time to shut the other lights off and create a cozier atmosphere.

Bedroom Lighting

You can take a similar approach to your bedroom and owner’s bathroom, when it comes to extending one space into the other. This might be a less dramatic statement in your bedroom however. Start with the main light of your bedroom and determine whether or not this fixture will also have to be a fan. You’ll want this main light to hang about 12 to 20 inches below your ceiling, assuming it’s a standard 8-foot ceiling. For each additional foot of ceiling height, add 3 inches.

Next, consider reading lights by your bed. Then wall light or floor lighting that could either make the room feel more spacious or make it easier to navigate at night when you need to use the restroom.

Bathroom Lighting

You might feel like the lighting in your bathroom is already adequate enough, but if that’s the case—ask yourself if there’s anywhere that decorative lighting would help enhance your design. Adding wall lighting in a dark corner, for example, could give your bathroom a more spacious feel. Does your bathroom vanity include lights? If not, home light fixtures over the mirrors can be an excellent way to add style while also making it easier to see while you’re getting ready.

Bathrooms are another place to consider cabinet lighting, too. Whether that means in-cabinet lighting to help enhance vision and design, or below cabinet lighting for ease of use.

Tip 3: Integrate Smart Home Lighting Automation

Home lighting automation is an excellent way to add convenience to your home while also saving on electricity. You can work with home builders to discover what home lighting automation options they offer, or you can purchase home lighting automation kits in store.

Pulte Smart Lighting

Pulte home builders offer home lighting automation that works with voice control and through your mobile device. Turning all of the lights off in your home at night can be as simple as saying “good night.”

Tip 4: Choose the Right Types of Light Bulbs

When making decisions about your home lighting fixtures, it’s important to consider the type of light bulbs you choose. As a rule of thumb, lower temperature bulbs are more like candles. They’ll provide a soft glow and are a good way to add more warmth to a space. Higher temperature lights are much brighter—more like the sky. These bulbs are better in areas where you need to stay motivated or get work done, but you probably don’t want them on all of the time.

Lighting can be a fun way to add character to your home, too. Don’t be afraid to play with some color if it seems appropriate. And occasionally, the right home lighting fixture can make the ultimate statement pieces.

Remember, lighting plays an important role in your home—but determining lighting doesn’t have to be a daunting task, even when building a new construction home. Just make sure to partner with leading home builders, like Pulte Homes and use these tips to help bring your home lighting plan to light.
