Atlanta’s Best High Schools for Student Athletes

With five pro sports teams, the Atlanta area has a strong athletic tradition. It's no wonder it was the home of the 1996 Olympics. Naturally, the city serves as a pipeline for future athletic stars. Public and private programs offer ways for youth to engage in different sports.


For some, sport is more than a hobby. Juggling life as a dedicated student-athlete requires a supportive atmosphere. The following schools represent some of the best Atlanta high schools for receiving an outstanding education and nurturing talented young athletes.


Greater Atlanta Christian School

A private K-12 School, Greater Atlanta Christian is constantly pursuing athletic excellence. It offers 14 sports hosted across 12 athletic facilities. Over the last three years, the school has had 60 collegiate signees. Its program earns accolades for teaching quality and its athletics.


Buford High School

Atlanta high school football is serious and highly competitive. The Buford High School team is frequently regional champions and often is in the running for a state championship. By no means is football the only excellent sport at the school. Since 2015, Buford High School has participated in state playoffs in soccer, tennis, gymnastics, wrestling, softball, track, and basketball. They are frequently state champions, runners-up, or semi-finalists. This public school embodies a commitment to academic and athletic excellence.


Blessed Trinity Catholic High

This private high school has brought home 43 state championships in different sports and has been runner-up and regional champions numerous times. In 2015, it won the Georgia Athletic Directors Association Directors Cup for the best all-around girls’ program. The school offers cheerleading, football, basketball, swimming, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and more.


McEachern High

Another top-tier Atlanta high school football program, some notable alumni have come from McEachern High School. Several student-athletes have played for the NFL and at least two sports anchors graduated from the school. 


St. Pius X Catholic High

Around 77% of students participate in high school teams at this 6-12 private school. Its athletic program is nationally recognized. In 2019, 20 of its 22 athletic teams qualified for the state playoffs, and they finished third in the state for the Directors Cup Championship. St. Pius X offers sports like lacrosse, golf, football, volleyball, and basketball. 


The Lovett School

This K-12 private school incorporates movement education from the beginning. Competitive varsity sports start with upper school students. Over 80% of the student body in grade 7 and higher compete in over sixteen available sports. Over the years, its teams have won over 100 state championships. Over 70 students have made high school All-American in their sport. Available athletics include basketball, tennis, swimming, soccer, and wrestling.


North Gwinnett High

Students at this public school have won state championships in softball, competitive cheerleading, cross-country, and soccer. Individuals have won state championships in track and field and wrestling. The school's equestrian team has won a national high school championship. 


Allatoona High

Another Atlanta high school football team with an impressive record, the team earned a state championship and was runner-up twice in the last decade. The public school’s volleyball team has been state champions, as has the boys’ lacrosse team and boys’ track team.


Westlake High

In addition to its STEM magnet program, Westlake has an athletic tradition. The girls’ basketball team secured the 2019 State Championship. A least six football graduates made it to NFL rosters and one alumnus won a Super Bowl. The girls’ track and field team is a three-time state champion, and its boys’ basketball team has also won top honors.


Marist School

This private school serves grades 7-12 and believes athletics is an important component of forming the whole person. Around 84 percent of students participate in at least one of the 71 interscholastic teams. In 2018, Marist won the 4A GADA Director’s Cup for the 19th consecutive year. MaxPreps ranked its athletic program 5th in the nation during the 2016-2017 year. The school has also made lists in Sports Illustrated.
