    About the Area

In 2012, Naperville ranked 54th on CNN Money Magazine’s top 100 Best Places to Live list. A family oriented city, Naperville provides the opportunity to explore the city’s past at the Naper Settlement, enjoy a picnic along the famous riverwalk, or catch some rays at Centennial Beach during the summer. The heart of Naperville lies in its Downtown area where you’ll find plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment for every member of the family. Besides the Naper Settlement, Naperville’s most popular attractions include the DuPage Children’s Museum and the Naperville Carillon.

    City Overview

Naperville was founded in 1831 by Joseph Naper. Originally over one hundred people lived at what is known today as the Naper Settlement, which is a now tourist attraction. After residents moved out of the Naper Settlement the town became known as the Village of Naperville in 1857. During the industrial revolution in the late 1880's the town became known as The City of Naperville due to the increase in residents in the area. It was officially known as The City of Naperville in 1890. Naperville was a farming town from the 1800's up until the early 1990's. Located 28 miles west of Chicago, Naperville is now home to approximately 142,000 people. The city is home to acclaimed public and parochial schools, the best public library system in the country, an array of healthcare options and an exceptionally low crime rate. Naperville has easy access to a variety of public transportation, housing and employment options. The city’s diversified employer base features high technology firms, retailers and factories, as well as small and home-based businesses. Residents also enjoy world-class parks, diverse worship options, the opportunity to serve on several city boards and commissions, a thriving downtown shopping and dining area, a renowned living history museum known as Naper Settlement and an active civic community.

    Culture / Entertainment

Or, if you’re looking to learn more on the history of Naperville, The Naper Settlement is a museum village of 19th century homes, shops and public buildings that display a collection of historical Naperville facts and furnishings. Local theaters offer an array of performances suited for every member of the family. The Magical Starlight Theatre is a program that offers a show geared toward children and families while the BrightSide Theatre provides classic and premier comedies and musicals to the local scene. If music and nightlife is more your thing, downtown Naperville offers a variety of venues and trendy clubs that feature live entertainment, dancing and karaoke.

The Naperville Park District is home to 140 parks totaling over 2,500 acres. These beautiful settings are located throughout Naperville, and each park has its own special use and amenities to appeal to a wide variety of interests and needs. Centennial Beach, one of the main attractions in Naperville, sees approximately 2,500 visitors per day during the summer as it features water depths for swimmers of all ages and almost six acres of a fence-enclosed area with park facilities. In nearby Lisle, the Morton Arboretum boasts 1,700 acres of beautiful gardens, world-renowned plant collections and rare and unique natural areas.
