Originally known as Mechanicsville, the village that became Olney was established in 1800. The area was mostly farmland, but it soon began attracting artisans. There are three Red Line Metro stations within 10 miles of the community: Glenmont, Shady Grove, and Rockville. In addition, there is a park and ride station at Norbeck Road that continues on to the Glenmont station. The community is also a short drive from I-495 and I-270. The Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) are the nearby airports.
