    About the Area

    Originally known as Mechanicsville, the village that became Olney was established in 1800. The area was mostly farmland, but it soon began attracting artisans. Just 20 miles north of Washington, DC, Olney puts you a short drive away from the culture and history of our nation’s capital, four-star restaurants, and an exciting array of entertainment options. If you’re up to it, you could even hike or bike to Washington, DC on the footpath that extends from Olney all the way along the Potomac waterfront.

    Recreation

    Horseback riding is enjoyed by many Olney residents and there are plenty of opportunities to do so in the Montgomery County area!     Transportation

    There are three Red Line Metro stations within 10 miles of the community: Glenmont, Shady Grove, and Rockville. In addition, there is a park and ride station at Norbeck Road that continues on to the Glenmont station. The community is also a short drive from I-495 and I-270. The Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) are the nearby airports

    • Take Exit #31 (Georgia Ave/Wheaton/Silver Spring) onto Georgia Ave (MD-97)
    • Follow for 10½ miles and bear left on Olney-Laytonsville Rd
    • Continue for approximately 2 miles and the community will be on your left at Wickham Rd
    • From I-270 North Local:
    • Take Exit #8 (Shady Grove Rd/Redland Rd) onto Shady Grove Rd East
    • Follow for about 4 miles and then continue on Airpark Rd
    • Go right on Woodfield Rd (MD-124)
    • Take a right onto Fieldcrest Rd
    • Take a right onto Olney-Laytonsville Rd and the community will be on the right at Wickham Rd
