About the Area

How did the City get its name? The "Unofficial" Story: Many years ago Buford was a railhead from which several freight wagons traveled regularly to Cumming, which even today has no rail lines. The story is that on one of the freight trips a heavily loaded wagon lost a wheel on a high hill and spilled a part of its load, including several large bags of sugar. The wheel was repaired and the wagon reloaded - except for the sugar, which had broken open and spilled on the hill. The area became known as "The hill where the sugar spilled." It was shortened to "The Sugar Hill" and then just to "Sugar Hill." Sugar Hill existed as a Georgia Militia District for many years before it was charted as a city on March 24, 1939.

Get out and enjoy the Georgia weather at the Sugar Hill Golf Course. Or if you prefer inside sports and cooler temperatures, head to the Duluth Ice Forum. Dining Destiny—Legacy Lodge located at Lake Lanier is perfect for family gatherings to intimate affairs, from a night out with the guys, the girls or a gathering of friends to lavish Holiday buffets, Legacy Lodge is the place to celebrate. There are also many dining options minutes away in Buford, such as Sperata, Aqua Terra, and 37 Main Rock Cafe.

Education

The education needs of Sugar Hill's children and youth are met through the Gwinnett County Public School System, one of the southeast’s largest and most acclaimed. Students in this system consistently score well above state, national, and city averages on standardized tests. Sugar Hill Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Lanier Middle School, and North Gwinnett High School serve Sugar Hill students; while nearby Gwinnett Technical College, Gwinnett University Center and Gainesville College provide outstanding opportunities for higher learning.

Barrington is the only community in Sugar Hill attached to the incredible Gary Pirkle Park. Gary Pirkle Park opened March 13th, 2010. Park hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm.
